Women’s Soccer Falls Short Against Towson in Season Opener

Butlion scores goal in 84th minute, but Explorers’ comeback attempt fizzles out in tough loss

PHILADELPHIA — The La Salle women's soccer team scored a goal late in the second half, but its comeback bid fell short as it dropped a 2-1 contest to Towson in its season opener Thursday night at McCarthy Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • La Salle played the Tigers tough in the first 15 minutes, as it took two shots while limiting the Tigers to three chances. Emily Banashefski booted a ball just over the crossbar, while Courtney Butlion headed a ball over the net off a pass from Giovanna Castorina.
  • Unfortunately, the Tigers managed to produce both of their goals over the next 20 minutes — one in the 16thminute and the one in the 35th minute — to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.
  • In the second half, the Explorers came out firing, taking three shots and two corner kicks in the first 15 minutes. After Towson had a red card issued following a play in which Ricshya Walker was denied a chance to score near the top of the 18-yard line, Banashefski had the ensuing free kick blocked by a wall of Towson defenders. Then, Elizabeth Estrada took two shots, both of which were saved.
  • Over the next 18 minutes, the Explorers managed to take four more shots, but could not find the back of the net. Walker had a shot from the left side saved in the 63rd minute, Justyce Hollenbach booted shots in the 64thand 70th minutes, and Haley Gschrey had her shot saved in the 78th minute.
  • Then, the Explorers finally got on the scoreboard in the 84th minute after Butlion connected on a sliding kick following passes from Castorina and Estrada to make it a 2-1 Towson lead.
  • Unfortunately, the Explorers could not get another shot at tying the game in the final six minutes.
GAME NOTES
  • The Explorers kept it close with Towson in total shots, as the Tigers outshot them only 14–12. The Explorers held an 8-5 shot advantage over the Tigers in the second half.
  • The Explorers drew seven of their eight corner kicks in the second half.
  • Estrada led the Explorers with three shots, two of which were on goal.
  • La Salle head coach Paul Royal came into Wednesday's season opener eyeing his 200th career win. Royal, who has a 199-153-37 career record in 21 seasons at La Salle, is trying to become the 83rd active Division I head coach to win 200 matches and only the 26th active D-I head coach to accomplish the feat while working at only one school in his or her entire career.
UP NEXT
  • The Explorers will travel to Albany, N.Y. on Sunday to face UAlbany. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
