Explorers Go for Two Straight Wins Against Richmond in A-10 Home Opener

PHILADELPHIA — The La Salle women's soccer team eyes its second straight victory in Atlantic 10 Conference play Sunday when it hosts Richmond in its conference home opener at McCarthy Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

SCOUTING THE EXPLORERS
  • The Explorers (3-5-2) are coming off a 3-0 win over George Washington on Thursday at George Washington. In that game, the Explorers received a first-half goal from Haley Gschrey and two second-half goals from Alyssa Gargiulo and Emily Banashefski. In addition, the Blue & Gold are coming off an offensive performance in which they had season highs in shots (28) and shots on goal (11).  
  • The Explorers look to win their sixth meeting against the Spiders in their last 11 meetings. The Explorers and Spiders have split the last 10 meetings, but the Explorers' last victory was a 2-1 overtime win on Sept. 26, 2019 in Richmond. The Explorers' last win over Richmond at McCarthy Stadium was a 2-0 victory on Oct. 22, 2015.
  • Gschrey, Banashefski, and Elizabeth Estrada paces the Explorers in points with six apiece. Gschrey has a team-high three goals, Banashefski has two goals and two assists, and Estrada has a team-high four assists and one goal.
  • Estrada is tied for fifth in the A-10 in assists with four. The sophomore is only two assists behind four others for the conference lead.
  • Richsya Walker leads the team with 27 shots and 14 shots on goal. The sophomore forward ranks fourth in the A-10 in shots and sixth in the conference in shots on goal.
  • Sophomore Gabby Neal and junior Michela Auguadro have split goalkeeping duties this season. Neal is 2-1 in net in three starts and has registered seven saves. Auguadro leads the team in saves with 37 in eight games of action, the last of which she earned her first shutout victory of the season.
  • La Salle is led by Paul Royal, who is in his 21st season at the helm. Royal has a 202-158-39 record for the Explorers.
SCOUTING THE SPIDERS
  • The Spiders are 2-6-3 and 0-3 in A-10 contests after dropping contests to VCU (1-0), Saint Joseph's (3-2) and George Mason (1-0), respectively. Against George Mason on Thursday, Richmond gave up a goal in the 24th minute and could not overcome that deficit.
  • The Spiders are led by Molly Wierman, who has eight points on three goals and two assists. The graduate student also paces Richmond in shots (20) and shots on goal (14).
  • Richmond is coached by Adam Denton, who is in his first season as a head coach with the Spiders and in his seventh season overall. Denton, who also coached at Davidson for six seasons, has a 38-59-21 career record.
