Women’s Soccer Comes Away With Tie at NJIT

NEWARK, N.J. — The La Salle women's soccer team scored a goal in the first half, but allowed a goal with four minutes left in the second half to end up forging a tie with NJIT on Thursday night at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.

With the tie, the Explorers are now 2-4-1 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Explorers came out firing in the first half, as it took four shots in the first 17 minutes.
  • On the fourth shot, Emily Banashefski headed in the ball off a corner kick from Madison McCready to give the Explorers a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute.
  • From there, the Explorers attempted five more shots before the half concluded with them leading by one.
  • In the second half, the Explorers and Highlanders took three shots apiece before the game was stopped for a hydration break at the 68th minute. Banashefski, Ricshya Walker and Sunni DiElmo each attempted a shot for La Salle during that 23-minute stretch.
  • Unfortunately, the Highlanders managed to get the equalizer in the 86th minute on a rebound after their initial shot was saved by La Salle goalkeeper Michela Auguadro.
  • From there, the Explorers got one last chance to score with four seconds left, as Banashefski took a shot from the right side following a cross from Olivia Vricella. However, the shot was saved by NJIT.
GAME NOTES
  • Banashefski's goal was her first one this season. The graduate student matched her goal total from last season.
  • McCready's assist was her first one of the season. The senior also tied her assist total from last season.
  • The Explorers finished with 15 shots for the game, marking their second highest total in a game this season.
  • Banashefski led La Salle with four shots in the game. Courtney Butlion added three shots for the Explorers, while DiElmo, Walker and Elizabeth Estrada had two shots apiece.
  • Auguadro paced the Explorers with five saves.
UP NEXT
  • The Explorers will return to Philadelphia and go down Broad Street to take on rival Temple on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
