La Salle Field Hockey to Play Nationally Ranked Massachusetts Friday, Drexel Sunday

PHILADELPHIA – La Salle field hockey will embark on another two-game weekend starting off by welcoming the #15 ranked UMass Minutewomen to town on Friday at 5:00 PM. The Explorers will then travel to Drexel to face the Dragons Sunday at 2:30 PM.

SCOUTING THE EXPLORERS:
  • La Salle is coming off a 1-1 weekend last week, dropping to Richmond, but defeating Longwood in overtime on Sunday.
  • Malena Balduzzi connected the game-winning goal for the Explorers only 36 seconds into the overtime period.
  • Sofia Pla lit up the box score in the win over the Lancers. The senior was involved in all three goals for La Salle, collecting two assists, and scoring one goal.
  • Zhao Rodrigo added her third goal of the season in the win. Rodrigo and Pla each sit atop of the leaderboard this season in goals with three total.
  • Laura McCann and Grace Feriolo each added a point in the win over Longwood, getting assists on the opening goal of the game.
  • Abby Boggs has seen all game action this season for La Salle and enters the weekend with a .770 save percentage.
 
SCOUTING THE MINUTEWOMEN:
  • UMass comes into the weekend ranked as the 15th team in the country, as listed by the NFHCA Polls.
  • The Minutewomen have played five nationally ranked opponents this season so far, and have a 3-2 record in those games.
  • Their first loss of the season came at the hands of #1 Northwestern, and recently they fell to #10 Harvard in a shootout. The three wins were against UMass Lowell, Saint Joseph's, and Boston College.
  • Elani Sherwood and Elena Cloconeanu each have six goals scored this season, the most on the team for UMass.
  • Myrte Van Herwijnen is the central piece for the Minutewomen in goal. The reigning NFHCA National Defensive Player of the Week comes into the weekend with a .792 save percentage.
 
SCOUTING THE DRAGONS:
  • The 8-3 Drexel Dragons will come into Sunday with a game against Hofstra under their belt from Friday.
  • The Dragons have had stiff competition throughout the season and have had formidable performances against those teams.
  • Their lone ranked win came against #20 Monmouth by a score of 2-1.
  • Anna Castaldo leads Drexel in scoring with five goals this season and 11 points.
  • Goalies have split time in net this season for Drexel, but Alana Poole has started six games opposed to Halle Geiger's five. As a team they have a .740 save percentage.
