Late Free Throws from Connor Lift Women’s Basketball Past Rider

PHILADELPHIA – La Salle women's basketball goes to 2-3 overall this season after a come from behind victory against the Rider Broncs 55-54. Ashleigh Connor hit two free-throws late to tie, and take the lead, which gave the Explorers the win. La Salle will be back in action on Saturday at 2:00 PM from our Nation's capital against the American Eagles.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The game began with exchanging three-point baskets on both sides of the court, with Ayisse Magassa knocking down the shot to get La Salle on the board.
  • The opening frame would very much be back-and-forth throughout its entire duration. Ashleigh Connor got her big night started early and ended the frame with four points.
  • Joan Quinn would knock down a late three-point shot, and Mackenzie Daleba added on a free throw for the Blue & Gold to hold a 13-10 lead after one.
  • Despite holding the lead early in the second, the Broncs would capitalize and take over in the second quarter.
  • Gabby Turco would eventually get the Broncs on top with a good jump shot, but after that Winner Bartholomew would lead Rider in their run.
  • She would score seven points in the second to give Rider the 23-12 advantage in the frame, and the 33-25 lead at the half.
  • Rider came out fast and added onto their lead, getting it up to 12 points thanks to two good free throws from Turco.
  • At the 5:43 mark in the third, the Broncs still held a 12-point lead, but a three-point bucket from Ty'Renisha Bowers would settle La Salle.
  • Connor and Anna Przyszlak would add on six points on the next handful of possessions to get La Salle within three with 3:26 remaining in the quarter.
  • Rider would respond, bringing their lead back to five, but Mackenzie Daleba took over the remaining minute. She would tip in a ball in the point, cutting the lead to just four.
  • As the clock expired, Daleba would knock down a deep three to bring La Salle within one heading into the fourth.
  • The 4:10 of the final quarter would be without any points from either side of the court, but Rider would strike first. Emilee Tahata hit two free throws and Mariona Cos-Morales put in a layup to bring Rider's lead to five.
  •  Four back-and-forth possessions later, Bowers hit a massive three-point shot with 1:34 on the clock to bring La Salle within one point.
  • Defensive stand, after defensive stand, the Explorers had their chance to change the game late. With nine seconds on the clock, La Salle found Connor who drove to the bucket and drew the foul.
  • The guard would go to the line with 1.2 seconds on the clock, and knock down two free throws to get the Explorers on top for the first time since the early stages of the second quarter.
  • One defensive stand later, La Salle got the victory.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Ashleigh Connor scored 20 points to lead La Salle, but one of the bigger stat lines was that she drew ten fouls in the win, including the game-winning foul late.
  • The Explorers spent a total of 31:06 down in the game, and fought back at the end to get the win.
  • Ayisse Magassa finished with 12 points and seven rebounds in the win, her second-best scoring performance of the year.
  • Mackenzie Daleba pulled in a team-high 12 rebounds, six offensive and six defensive.
  • Reedy Bowers set a season-high in points tonight with eight, as she went 3-6 from the field and 2-4 from three-point range.
  • La Salle capitalized on the 28 Rider turnovers and scored 24 points off of those turnovers.
  • Ashleigh Connor went 8-12 from the free-throw line tonight as she attempted ten more than the next person on the team.
