Quinn Set New Career-High as Women’s Basketball Wins Nailbiter over Northern Kentucky

SAN DIEGO - The La Salle women's basketball team defeated the Northern Kentucky Norse, 70-67 in its first game of the UCSD Winter Classic.

In an airtight second half in which La Salle never trailed, the Explorers knocked down nine straight free throws in the final 77 seconds to secure the victory, with Ashleigh Connor scoring eight in the final three minutes. La Salle had three players score over 15 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Explorers scored the first 11 points of the game, NKU countered with 19 of the final 9 points in the first quarter, including the last seven points to trim the advantage to 20-19.
  • In the second quarter, with Northern Kentucky, trailing by one, 26-25, the Explorers hit the gas. Powered by Aryss Macktoon on both offense and defense, La Salle went on a 14-4 run to end the half concluded by a Macktoon steal and Joan Quinn layup.
  • The Norse ruled the third quarter, outscoring La Salle 19-12, with the difference coming in the last four minutes. Quinn knocked down a key three and Connor knocked down a pair of free throws to end the quarter and give the Explorers a 52-48 lead heading into the final stanza.
  • A Norris three pointer with 8:30 remaining cut the lead to one point, 54-53, for the first time since the early second quarter.
  • While the Explorers struggled to put the game away on the offensive end, the defense was supurb, allowing just one field goal in the final 8 minutes of gametime.
  • Northern Kentucky hit another three-pointer with 1:25 on the clock, but La Salle's free throw shooting sealed the win for the Explorers.
