HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Despite an early 3-0 run to open the game for Massachusetts, La Salle was able to stay with the Minutewomen and make this a really physical contest.
- Maddie Henderson broke open the scoring for the Explorers with 7:01 remaining in the opening quarter, which was followed by a Mackenzie Click goal with 4:04 to go, making it 3-2 UMass.
- Massachusetts got back in rhythm offensively thanks in part to Caroline Whelan, who scored two of the next three goals for UMass.
- Click added her second goal of the frame with 33 seconds remaining, cutting the Massachusetts lead in half.
- The second quarter played heavily in favor of the Minutewomen. Kassidy Morris and Fiona McGowan each contributed in multiple ways for UMass to pile on early in the second.
- Morris added two goals within the first five minutes of the quarter, while McGowan added a goal and two assists in that same stretch.
- The teams went on a scoring drought for a six-minute stretch, before either side scored. UMass added one more, and Claudia Steinmetz scored her first of the day with 3:59 left in the half.
- A late foul on UMass gave Katie Johnson the free-position opportunity, and she converted bringing the score to 11-5 UMass at the half.
- Early in the third, Johnson and Henderson teamed up on a scoring possession for La Salle, Johnson netting the goal and Henderson with the assist.
- The Explorers got within six thanks to a goal from Molly Maloney, her second in as many games.
- Massachusetts would go on to end any chances of a comeback from La Salle, as they went on to outscore the Explorers 7-2 through the end of the third, and the entirety of the fourth.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Six different Explorers netted goals today, three of them having multi-goal efforts in the loss. Johnson, Click, and Steinmetz all scored twice.
- Five different Explorers had multi-point games with Maloney and Henderson having scored one goal and assisting on another.
- The draw control numbers are skewed heavily in favor of the Minutewomen thanks to Jordan Dean corralling 19 draw controls of her own, ten more than all of La Salle.
- The game was physical from start to finish, both teams combining for ten yellow cards in the contest.
