A Late Comeback Falls Short for Women’s Lacrosse Against Duquesne

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Explorers made a late comeback against the Duquesne Dukes after being down early in the first half, but that comeback fell short as they fell 12-11. La Salle goes to 2-10 on the year while still searching for their first conference win this year.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Katie Johnson's dominant performance got started early in the opening quarter with a goal less than two minutes in. Mackenzie Click assisted on the goal, getting La Salle up 1-0 early.
  • Duquesne responded with force, scoring four unanswered goals throughout most of the first quarter. Claudia Steinmetz did, however, end the streak for Duquesne and added a goal for La Salle.
  • The second quarter was all Duquesne, from the start. Despite there being only four goals combined in the second, three of them were by the Dukes.
  • With 3:02 remaining in the half, Duquesne led 7-2, their largest lead of the game. Maddie Henderson, however did convert on a free-position shot to make it 7-3 before the half.
  • Duquesne added another goal to start the third, but then the Explorers started to get into an offensive rhythm.
  • Click added a goal, again on a free-position shot, to cut the Duquesne lead in half with 11:57 left in the third.
  • After another conversion for Dukes, Gina D'Angelo added her first goal of the game on another free-position opportunity making it 9-5 Dukes.
  • Tristen Chang helped to get Duquesne on top by six goals, their largest lead of the game, however, Sam Klein and Johnson added goals to cut the lead to four.
  • The first goal of the fourth game with 10:26 left, thanks to Melissa Hewitt, with Click adding another assist to her day. The score sat at 11-8 Duquesne.
  • Another Duquesne goal was followed by a conversion by Molly Maloney with 6:37 left, again the Dukes led by three.
  • The late comeback was powered by Johnson. She scored her third of the game with 5:52 remaining, the assist on this play from Lola Quigley.
  • Stout defense by La Salle held Duquesne scoreless the rest of the way, and Johnson was not finished either. She scored her fourth goal with just under a minute remaining to make it a one-goal game, but it was not enough.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Katie Johnson finished the day leading La Salle with four goals. This is the fourth time this season she has scored four or more goals in a game.
  • Mackenzie Click had a strong day herself, finishing with one goal, two assists and three points.
  • Steinmetz added two points today and led La Salle with five draw controls.
  • Sam Klein scored her second goal of the season in the contest today, Melissa Hewitt scoring too, her third of the season.
  • Mary Babbage got the start in goal for La Salle and ended the day with 19 saves.
 
UP NEXT:
  • La Salle will return to McCarthy Stadium on Saturday, April 20th at 1:00 p.m. for their final home game of the season against the George Mason Patriots.
