Men's Rowing | April 24, 2024

PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle University men's rowing program held a boat christening event to honor two individuals who were near and dear to the program on Saturday, April 20 at Vesper Boat Club.

Over 100 friends of the program were in attendance to celebrate James "Jimmy" Bagnell '87 and Betty Shaw, the late wife of La Salle alum and former coach, Ken Shaw. Their names now adorn shells that will be rowed with pride by the Explorers for years to come.

"These two boats represent more than just tools for our athletes," head coach Ivo Krakic said at the event. "They symbolize our community's spirit, dedication and passion for the sport of rowing. We are honored to pay tribute to the exceptional individuals whose names they bear."

A member of the rowing team during his time on campus, Bagnell kept rowing a part of his life for the many years after his days at La Salle were over. A long-time member of Malta Boat Club, Bagnell assisted with learn to row programs throughout his time with the club.

Married in 1964, Ken and Betty Shaw were integral members of the Philadelphia rowing community. Their friendship and partnership with the Dad Vail Regatta helped the regatta build its reputation as the largest collegiate rowing event in the country.
