Women’s Soccer Drops to Bucknell to Begin the Season

Box Score LEWISBURG, Pa — Haley Gschrey netted the first goal of the season for La Salle, but it was not enough as the Explorers opened the season falling to reigning Patriot League Champions the Bucknell Bison. Six freshmen saw the field in the opener.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Bucknell struck early to go up 1-0. Explorers' goalkeeper Michela Auguadro got a hand on the ball but could not stop the strike as the Bison found the back of the net.
La Salle punched back with a flurry of chances, including a shot by Ricshya Walker on target and a dart from Elizabeth Estrada that rang off the crossbar.
Bucknell added another goal to its lead, capitalizing on a penalty kick in the 26^th minute to go up 2-0. They held the lead going into halftime.
The second half nearly kicked off with a bang as Gschrey rocked a shot from the center circle. However, the Bucknell keeper saved at the last possible second to keep the deficit at two.
The Explorers' got on the board in the 60^th minute. Olivia Vricella intercepted a cross-field pass in the midfield and found Gschrey on the far wing. The senior created space with a nifty move and fired the ball across the face of the goal, beating the goalkeeper and cutting the Bison lead to one.
Auguardro continued to stand tall in goal in the second half. The keeper punched out a well-placed ball in the 75^th minute to keep the contest within striking distance.
Despite some strong offensive opportunities from Gschrey and Vricella, Bucknell kept the pressure on and pulled out the victory, 2-1.

GAME NOTES

Ella Cadigan, Alexis Garcia, Taylor Jourdanais, Bri Lewis, Kameron Rase, and Niki Siafarika made their La Salle debuts.
Auguadro made five saves, it is the fourth straight game she has made five or more saves dating back to last season.
Gschrey picked up where she left off from last year with her goal. She led the Explorers with eight last season.
Vricella's assist is the third of her career.

The Explorers continue their season-opening road stretch with a battle against Sacred Heart. The match will kick off Sunday at noon.
