Box Score FAIRFIELD, Ct – On a rain-soaked afternoon in Fairfield, the La Salle women's soccer team overcame nearly an hour of weather delays to earn its first win of the season.
Haley Gschrey scored her second goal of the season, with
Sunni DiElmo adding the game winner to put La Salle over the top.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After the first few minutes did not yield a shot on target, Sacred Heart converted the first of the game, going up 1-0 in the 14th.
- La Salle came right back with a goal of its own to tie things up in the 17th minute. Haley Gschrey scored off an assist from Justyce Hollenbach to put La Salle on the board.
- Only eight minutes later, La Salle struck again. This time it was Gabby Picco assisting as she found DiElmo who knocked a goal in the upper right side and gave La Salle its first lead of the season.
- La Salle outshot the Pioneers for the remainder of the first. Ricshya Walker and DiElmo each got a shot on target, but both were saved by the homestanding keeper. La Salle took a 2-1 lead into the break.
- The Explorers rolled out of the gate in the second frame, with shots from Gschrey and Picco in the first ten minutes. In the 56th minute, a lightning delay suspended the game for 25 minutes before play resumed.
- The Pioneers rifled a shot on goal in the 79th minute, but La Salle keeper Michela Auguadro turned the shot away.
- Auguadro continued to stand tall between the sticks, making another save as time trickled away.
GAME NOTES
- Justyce Hollenbach and Jillian Drumm made their first starts of the young season.
- Gschrey is one of four players in the A-10 with two or more goals on the year.
- Both sides had one yellow card pulled on them.
