NEWARK, De – In an eventful match that saw six goals and three penalty kick attempts, the La Salle Explorers (2-1-1) secured their second victory of the season, taking down the Delaware Blue Hens (0-2-1), 4-2. The match was the final of four straight road games to begin the 2024 campaign for La Salle.
Freshman
Kameron Rase starred for the Explorers. The Pennsylvania native netted two goals, the first multi-goal performance for La Salle this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a few minutes of back-and-forth action to begin the contest, Haley Gschrey hit the top right corner of the goal to put the Explorers up 1-0 in the 14th minute.
- La Salle goalkeeper Michela Auguadro made her first save of the game in the 16th minute, stopping a shot ticketed for the center of the goal.
- The Explorers upped the pressure on the Blue Hens in the next 20 minutes. La Salle did not allow a shot attempt while Ella Cadigan and Justyce Hollenbach fired off strikes as part of a strong Explorer attack.
- La Salle's offensive pressure culminated in Rase scoring the first goal of her career. She was assisted by Hollenbach and fellow freshman Cadigan to put the Explorers up 2-0 in the 36th minute.
- Delaware began the second half on the offensive. In the 54th minute, the Blue Hens converted on a penalty kick to cut the lead to one.
- Both sides turned up the heat as the game got chippy. A Delaware foul resulted in a penalty kick goal from Ricshya Walker to put the Explorers up 3-1 in the 62nd minute.
- Only five minutes later, in minute 67, a foul in the box gave a PK opportunity right back to the Blue Hens, but the shot was off target keeping the score at 3-1. Deleware would convert on a shot opportunity a few minutes later to trim the lead down to one goal.
- The Explorers were relentless the rest of the way, allowing only one shot attempt from the Blue Hens while getting off several of their own. Rase scored her second goal of the evening in the 88th minute to seal the victory for the Explorers.
GAME NOTES
- Gschrey has now earned at least one point in each of the first four matches for La Salle. She has scored in three of the four. The senior is tied for second in the Atlantic-10 in goals.
- La Salle has had three straight games with two or more goals.
- Walker has scored in back-to-back games.
- Alongside Rase, Cadigan has also been a freshman who has impressed. The midfielder now has earned at least a point in two consecutive matches.
