Explorers Comeback Not Enough in Match Against FDU

PHILADELPHIA – Explorers women's lacrosse team lost to FDU by a score of 12-11 Saturday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium Saturday afternoon. La Salle came within one goal of completing a comeback in which it was down by as many as eight goals, however it could not score in the final four minutes.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After FDU scored the first four goals of the game, junior Emi Waldron scored with 5:28 remaining in the first to put the Explorers on the board.
  • Senior Katie Johnson scored the next goal to make it 4-2.
  • FDU got one goal back before Johnson got her second goal of the day, scoring with 2:57 left.
  • The visitors got another goal right before the buzzer sounded to make it 6-3.
  • In the second quarter, the lead continued to grow, with FDU scoring five goals within the first nine minutes of the frame.
  • Johnson ended FDU's 6-0 run by getting a goal with 13 seconds left in the half.
  • Immediately after the break, La Salle went on the offensive, with sophomore Kate Licciardi scoring 37 seconds into the third.
  • Junior Molly Maloney recorded a goal 48 seconds later to get it to 11-6.
  • Redshirt junior Alana Lathan got on the scoring sheet with a goal minutes later, followed by Katie Johnson scoring with 8:33 left in the third.
  • About five minutes later, Lathan got her second to get La Salle's deficit to two.
  • Maloney scored a buzzer-beater to make it 11-10 entering the fourth quarter.
  • FDU added to its lead with 9:17 left in the game, before Maloney responded with a free position shot goal five minutes later.
  • The visitors held possession for majority of the final minutes to hold off the Explorers.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 
  • Johnson's four goals puts her at 10 goals throughout the season. It's her seventh straight game with at least two goals.
  • Draw controls were 14-11 in La Salle's favor.
  • Brooke Nelson came into the game in the second quarter at goalie, making six saves and allowing two goals.
