Women’s Basketball Stays Hot From Deep But Comes Up Short At Saint Louis

St. Louis, MO – Graduate student Jolene Armendariz scored 20 points, but it wasn't enough, as the La Salle women's basketball team fell 73-51 at Saint Louis on Saturday night.

One game after setting a Division 1 career-high in three-pointers made, Armendariz set another career-best with six makes from beyond the arc. Her 20 points on 11 shots also marked a career-high.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first basket of the night for the Explorers came from beyond the arc at the hands of Armendariz. Five minutes in, the Explorers trailed 9-6.
  • Seeing her first game action since December 21, sophomore Aryss Macktoon forced three quick turnovers in the first quarter. Still, the Billikens held on to a 14-6 lead.
  • Freshman Joan Quinn and Armendariz knocked down back-to-back three's to cut the Billiken lead to 18-12 at the conclusion of the opening period.
  • Following a made layup by junior Ayisse Magassa, La Salle entered another scoring drought in the second, failing to convert on another field goal until Armendariz made her second three of the night with two minutes remaining in the half. At halftime, Saint Louis remained in the lead by a score of 30-18.
  • Saint Louis continued to extend the lead in the second half, scoring six unanswered to open the half.
  • Another pair of three's from Quinn and Armendariz brought the Explorers back, as they trailed 13 heading into the final ten minutes.
  • Despite two more triples in the fourth quarter, Armendariz' 20 points were not enough as the Billikens went on an 11-0 run in the final minutes to ice the game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • With 17 steals in the game, the Explorers set a new season-high in takeaways. Redshirt sophomore Ashleigh Connor and Macktoon led the way with four each.
  • Continuing her dominance on the boards, Magassa grabbed six rebounds, four of which came in a three-minute stretch in the second quarter.
NEXT UP

Coming up, the Explorers will return home for a midweek contest with the Fordham Rams on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. With only five games remaining, the Blue and Gold are slated to face off with the Rams twice.
