Henrico, VA – La Salle women's basketball extended its winning streak to four games and advanced in the Atlantic 10 Championship with a 59-51 victory over Saint Louis on Thursday night at Henrico Sports and Events Center. The Explorers set the tone defensively, never trailing and owning the boards in a postseason performance to move to 18-12 on the year.
La Salle immediately seized control in the quarterfinal matchup, building a 15-12 lead after the opening quarter behind suffocating defense and a relentless attack on the glass. The Explorers broke the game open in the second quarter, holding Saint Louis to just nine points while stretching their advantage to 31-21 at halftime, punctuated by a late jumper from Aryss Macktoon with six seconds remaining in the half. Saint Louis threatened in the third, trimming the deficit to seven entering the final period, but La Salle responded with quick baskets from Ashleigh Connor and a timely three-pointer early in the fourth to rebuild their cushion. The Explorers held off every Saint Louis push, leading for more than 39 minutes and never allowing a lead change.
Aryss Macktoon was a force in the paint, finishing with a double-double of 15 points and 14 rebounds, and contributed four assists in 36 minutes. Ashleigh Connor led all Explorers with 16 points, including two clutch three-pointers, while also posting a game-high eight assists and five steals. Joan Quinn added eight points and hit two long-range shots to boost the offense.
The Explorers' success was rooted in their defensive tenacity and rebounding dominance, forcing 14 turnovers and collecting 22 offensive boards for a 49-42 overall rebounding edge. La Salle scored 10 points on the fast break and turned nine steals into 10 points off turnovers.
The Explorers will continue their postseason push tomorrow, as the team takes on Richmond at 7:30 PM on CNBC.
