Philadelphia, PA – Taylor Jourdanais and Sienna Mount scored their first collegiate goals, and Ella Cadigan dished out two assists as La Salle women's soccer rallied past American to earn a 2-1, season-opening win at McCarthy Stadium on Thursday night.
Mount, a junior defensive midfielder, netted the game-winner on a header in the 69th minute inside the six-yard box, off a pass from graduate student Justyce Hollenbach, who found Mount off a free kick from Cadigan.
Jourdanais equalized for the Explorers in the 60th minute with a header off a crisp corner kick from Cadigan, swaying momentum in La Salle's favor.
The Explorers outshot American 21-7 in the contest, including 11-3 in the first half, but trailed 1-0 after the first 45 minutes.Â
American jumped out to an early lead when Lauren Sanders scored the opening goal on a penalty kick in the seventh minute.
Hollenbach nearly equalized in the 32nd minute with a high right-footed strike, but a leaping fingertip save by American's goalkeeper Riley Moulbury kept the Eagles in front.
The Explorers move to 17-9-4 in season openers since 1997.
La Salle will travel to face No. 11 Virginia in Charlottesville on Thursday, Aug. 20.
