WEST WINDSOR, N.J. — The La Salle men's rowing team's Varsity 8+ and 2
nd Varsity 8+ boats held their own on the first day of the 120
th IRA National Championship Regatta on Friday at Mercer Lake.
Making their first appearances at the IRA National Championship, the Explorers' Varsity 8+ and 2
nd Varsity 8+ crews advanced to Saturday's D semifinals.
The Varsity 8+, ranked 19
th in the country, will compete in its D semifinal at 8:50 a.m. after it finished third in its four-team repechage on Friday in a time of 6:12.15. The V8, coxswained by
Trevor Fawcett, ended 9.43 seconds behind No. 13 Penn, which won the repechage to advance to the A and B semifinals.
The 2
nd Varsity 8+, ranked 21
st in the nation, will compete in its D semifinal at 9:06 a.m. after it finished third in its three-team repechage on Friday in 6:21.51. The V8, coxswained by
Elizabeth Boyle, ended 12.89 seconds behind No. 11 Penn, which won the repechage to advance to the A and B semifinals.
Before competing in the repechage, the V8 and 2V both finished fifth in their respective heats.
The V8 posted a time of 5:55.67 in its heat that featured No. 3 Princeton, No. 6 Harvard, No. 11 Boston, No. 14 Wisconsin, and No. 24 UC San Diego. Princeton (5:35.67) and Harvard (5:41.73) finished first and second in the heat, respectively, to move on to the A and B semifinals.
The 2V crossed the finish line in a time of 6:09.02 in its heat that featured No. 3 Harvard, No. 6 Syracuse, No. 12 Boston, No. 14 Wisconsin, and Santa Clara. Harvard (5:44.16) and Syracuse (5:47.31) finished first and second in the heat, respectively, to advance to the A and B semifinals.
