Men's Soccer Hosts Rhody, UMass This Weekend

PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle men's soccer team returns to McCarthy Stadium on Friday night to kick off a four-game Atlantic 10 homestand. The Explorers face Rhode Island on Friday at 7:00 PM and Massachusetts on Sunday at 1:00 PM

The Explorers have been on fire as of late, posting a 3-1-2 record in their last six games. A last-second goal by Rob Friskey led the team past UMBC in the last home game before the team took to the road and went 1-0-1 in the first weekend of conference play. The Explorers shut out Dayton for the second straight year, 2-0, before taking No. 23 Xavier to a double overtime 2-2 draw.

Nick Becker and Kevin Pink scored their first collegiate goals in Ohio last weekend. John McCarthy, the reigning Soccer Six Player of the Week, made 19 stops in goal last weekend, including 13 against the Musketeers. McCarthy's 6.67 saves per game ranks him sixth in the nation in that category, and he is 13th nationally in total saves (60).

Jason Plumhoff continues to present an offensive threat, assisting on both goals at Xavier. He leads the team with 11 points on four goals and three assists.

Rhode Island also went 1-0-1 to open Atlantic 10 play last weekend, with a win over Saint Louis and a 1-1 draw with No. 13 Charlotte. Reece Markman scored his first goal of the season, giving the Rams the only scoring needed in the 1-0 win over the Billikens. Freshman Mike Casey scored his first collegiate goal against the 49ers, a game-tying tally that held up in the double OT draw.

Ross Morison leads the Rams in scoring with seven points on three goals and one assist. Joey Haught also has a pair of goals. Payton Warwick has spent just shy of 1,000 minutes in goal for the Rams, racking up 63 saves with a .818 save percentage and two shutouts.

After winning only one of their first nine games, the Minutemen have won two of their last three with the one loss being an overtime heartbreaker to No. 13 Charlotte.

They posted a 2-1 win over No. 19 Bradley to close out the nonconference season on Oct. 1, their first win over a ranked team since 2008. Brett Canepa scored the game winner in the 85th minute. Canepa was once again the winning scorer, converting a penalty kick which proved the game's only score in a 1-0 win over Saint Louis.

Although the 49ers held a 21-7 shot advantage, UMass took Charlotte to double overtime before falling with just under four minutes remaining.

UMass has only scored seven goals on the season, with the pair from Canepa last weekend and a pair from Josh Schwartz. Canepa also has an assist for his team-leading five points. Shane Curran-Hayes has played most of the time in goal, with a .803 save percentage and two shutouts.
