PHILADELHPIA – Another lock-down defensive performance and two goals by sophomore
Courtney Niemiec lifted La Salle past city-rival Saint Joseph's 3-0 on a brisk Sunday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium.
The Explorers (10-0-1, 2-0-0) continue their remarkable shutout streak which now stands at 11 games. La Salle is still the only team in the nation at the Division I level (men or women) that have yet to allow a goal in 2011.
“I was very impressed with our pressure and commitment defending today,” said head coach
Paul Royal. “They have some talented offensive players on that team and we did a good job shutting them down.”
Freshman
Emily Fenton scored her first career goal in the 39th minute to put La Salle on top 1-0. One minute later, Fenton assisted on Niemeic's first goal of the day that beat the keeper in the upper 90 just under the crossbar.
Leading 2-0 at halftime, La Salle added the final tally of the game just seven minutes into the second period when a foul committed inside the 18-yard box led to a penalty kick. Niemiec took the PK for the Explorers and buried it inside the left post to give La Salle a 3-0 edge.
The PK for La Salle was the first since August 25, 2009 when Sara Copare was scored on one in the 72nd minute of a 4-2 win for the Explorers against another city-rival, Drexel.
Melissa Sanger had another quiet day on the back line and needed just two saves to secure her 11th straight shutouts.
The Hawks (5-4-3, 0-1-1) could only muster five shots against La Salle's defense with Mo Hawkins leading the way with two, both of them on goal.
La Salle will now look towards next Friday when they welcome No. 16 Dayton to McCarthy Stadium.
