McCarthy Saves Career High 18 as Explorers Play No. 9 Charlotte to 2-2 Draw

Box Score PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle men's soccer team faced a barrage of 38 shots but sophomore netminder John McCarthy set a new career mark with 18 saves as the Explorers (4-6-4, 2-0-3 Atlantic 10) tied No. 9 Charlotte 2-2 in the team's fourth straight double overtime game.

McCarthy recorded 11 of his saves in the first period as the 49ers (10-2-1, 3-0-2 Atlantic 10) attempted 19 shots in the first 45 minutes and came up with a huge stop on a Jennings Rex header just over a minute into the second overtime period. He has now recorded double digit saves in the last four straight games and five of the last six, and hit a career mark in two of the last three.

Charlotte came in to the game ranked ninth in the College Soccer News poll, 10th in the NSCAA coaches' poll and 14th in the Soccer America rankings.

The 49ers broke through in the 42nd minute on a T.J. Beaulieu goal on an assist from Tyler Gibson, and took a 1-0 lead into the break.

Jason Plumhoff sparked the La Salle offense, however, in the second half with a direct kick goal in the 58th minute for his sixth goal of the season. He took the kick following a Charlotte foul and lofted the ball into the upper left 90 of the net to knot the score at one apiece.

The Explorers went up 2-1 in the 72nd minute on a Jidell Roach goal. Andrew Lill took a shot which bounced off of Niner goalie Klay Davis's pads, and Roach picked up the rebound and drilled it into the net.

Charlotte dashed the hopes of an upset in regulation when Isaac Caughran found the back of the net on a cross from Donnie Smith in the 88th minute.

Both squads had a number of chances in the overtime periods. In the 92nd minute, rookie Tom Baker found himself in a one-on-one with Davis but Davis came up with the stop. Charlotte's best chance was on Rex's header in the second overtime.

Charlotte outshot La Salle 38-18 and held a commanding 10-3 edge on corner kicks. Giuseppe Gentile attempted a game-high seven shots for the Niners while Roach and Baker led the Explorers with five apiece.

The Explorers stay on 20th and Olney for one more game when they host Saint Louis on Sunday at 1:00 PM. The program's seniors will be honored in a pregame ceremony starting at approximately 12:45.
