McCarthy Remains Atop National Rankings, Named Philly Soccer News Player of the Week

PHILADELPHIA - La Salle sophomore goalkeeper John McCarthy stayed on top of the national statistics rankings this week, and was also named the SoccerSavings.com/Philly Soccer News College Player of the Week announced late Tuesday.

McCarthy earned Player of the Week honors for the second straight week and continues to lead the nation in saves and saves per game following an outstanding performance this past weekend. He blasted his previous career mark of 14 saves by stopping 18 shots in La Salle's 2-2 tie with #10/9 Charlotte on Friday night. He faced a barrage of 38 shots and came up with huge stops in the two overtime periods. That game marked the fourth straight and fifth of the last six in which he made double digit saves.

Although the string of 10+ save games ended on Sunday against Saint Louis, McCarthy made eight as the Explorers rallied from a two-goal deficit to knock off the Billikens 3-2 in double overtime. That marked the fifth straight double overtime game for the Explorers.

Behind McCarthy's leadership in net, the Explorers have gone 5-1-3 in their last nine games and remain unbeaten in Atlantic 10 play. The Explorers are also 8-0-4 in their last 12 regular season conference games dating back to Oct. 22, 2010.

McCarthy meets up with his match in goal on Friday as the Explorers head to Fordham for a game with first-place implications on the line. The Explorers and Rams - along with Dayton - are currently in a three-way tie for first place, and Fordham keeper Ryan Meara ranks 15th in the nation in goals against average. The teams kick off at 5:00 PM in the Bronx as they play in the first of two games of a La Salle/Fordham doubleheader, with the women playing at 7:30.
