PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Junior
Alfredo Santana continued to add on to a magical season and finished in contention for an NCAA berth with a 14th place finish at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships on Saturday at Maryland-Eastern Shore.
“Santana was in second for the first four miles with a pretty good lead,” said head coach Dan Ireland. “Then the pack caught him late, he rallied a little bit but he ran well. It was his first experience at the regional meet and I thought he had a solid effort.”
If Penn State ends up getting a bid to the national meet as a team, then Santana will get in as an individual. The NCAA bid invitations for cross country will be revealed at 7 p.m. on Sunday.
Senior
Nick Crits was another Explorer with a top 20 finish. Crits finished in 17th place with a time of 31:02.
“This was his best race of this year, maybe of his career,” said Ireland.
Santana and Crits have been consistent top performers in each meet for the Atlantic 10 Championships.
The next Explorer to cross the finish line was senior
David Hausherr. Hausherr finished in 32nd place with a time of 31:22.
Out of the 25 scoring teams, La Salle finished in the 6th place. They were the highest ranked Atlantic 10 team in the standings, only one spot ahead of city rival St. Joseph's. Georgetown won the meet with 47 points, where the Explorers had 154 points.
“We beat the teams we should have beaten and maybe we could have gotten past Navy but I was pleased overall,” Ireland said.
