Field Hockey Takes On Richmond On Friday In A-10 Semifinal

PHILADELPHIA – After over two months of field hockey, the postseason is finally here. The fourth-seeded La Salle Explorers will take on the top-seeded Richmond Spiders on Friday at 11 AM from Saint Joseph's Ellen Ryan Field.

Each Atlantic 10 Tournament game will feature live statistics and free live video. Temple and Massachusetts will meet in the second semifinal on Friday at 2 PM with the championship game to be played on Saturday at 2 PM.

Single-game tickets are $6 for adults, $4 for children under 18 and senior citizens, and $3 for Atlantic 10 students with an ID. Two-day passes are available for $10.

Scouting the Explorers (8-10, 3-3 Atlantic 10)

In head coach Michelle Marks third season, the Explorers reached the postseason, earning the fourth seed via a tie-breaker over Lock Haven. The Blue and Gold played well over its final eight games, winning five, including three one-goal decisions.

The Explorers featured the league's most balanced offense, as ten different players have scored goals, with another three players adding assists. The defense, anchored by freshman goalie Lisa Shaffer and three sophomores (Heather Barretta, Jessica Deaner and Haley Jennings), ranks second in the league and 24th nationally.

Sophomore Mariel Papa leads the team in points with 14 after scoring five goals and adding four assists. Classmate Olivia Shoemaker has scored six goals for 12 points, followed by freshman Maddy Tettelbach (five goals), junior Becca Chylack (four goals) and junior Neelam Kumar (team-high five assists).

On defense, Shaffer continues to lead the nation in save percentage (.816) and is 12th in saves per game. The four-time Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week sports a 1.76 GAA, which is second in the league, and would rank third all-time in La Salle history if the season concluded today.

Jennings ranks 18th nationally with four defensive saves, a category that La Salle ranks 13th as a team.

Richmond won its final five Atlantic 10 games after a 2-1 loss to Temple to capture the regular season championship and top seed. The Spiders have the top overall record in the league, at 13-6, and have won eight of their last nine games. UR is making its 11th straight A-10 Tournament appearance.

Kaitlin Peterson, the reigning A-10 Player of the Week after recording a hat-trick versus La Salle on Sunday, leads the team with 14 goals, 10 assists and 34 points. She leads the A-10 in points and is second in goals and assists.

Chelsea Davies adds 23 points (eight goals, seven assists), while Rebecca Barry had scored nine goals for 21 points. The Spiders are the A-10s top offense, scoring 2.53 goals per game.

Anna Zarkoski guards the cage for Richmond and is ranked third nationally with a .809 save percentage. She sports a 1.53 GAA.
