PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle women's basketball team remains at Tom Gola Arena tonight for the second of back-to-back home contests when the Explorers host Big 5 rival Penn at 7 p.m.
The Explorers enjoy a 32-6 all-time advantage over the Quakers, although it was the Quakers taking last year's low-scoring affair 45-40 at the Palestra. Prior to that, the Explorers had won five straight over their city rivals.
Scouting La Salle...
The Explorers remain at Tom Gola Arena for the second of back-to-back home games when they host Penn tonight at 7 p.m. The team is coming off of a tough 61-48 defeat to #15/15 Rutgers.
Alexis Scott led the Explorers with 18 points to help the squad push the Scarlet Knights until the end.
Ruvanna Campbell hit double-digit rebounds with 11 to lead the defensive effort.
Scott averaged 17.5 points over La Salle's last two games with 17 at St. John's followed by her 18-point performance against Rutgers. She is now second on the team in scoring with 10.8 per contest, and leads with a 53.1 percent shooting clip from the floor.
Campbell has stepped up her defensive game lately, with her 11 rebounds upping her season average to a team-leading 6.3 per game. She also had seven blocks in the past two games, with three at St. John's followed by four against Rutgers.
Following tonight's contest, the Explorers head on the road for three straight games. They will play two at Long Island University this week as part of the Courtyard LaGuardia Turkey Classic, followed by a trip to West Virginia.
Scouting Penn...
Penn enters tonight's contest with a 2-0 record, earning a 70-61 win in overtime in the season opener against St. Francis (N.Y.) before holding off Rider 66-57 this past Saturday. Sophomore Alyssa Baron - the reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Year - put up 27 points in the win over St. Francis before pouring in 30 against Rider. Baron also chips in 4.5 rebounds per game.
Senior Jess Knapp averages nearly a double-double, with 10.0 points per game and 9.0 rebounds per game, and has blocked a team-high seven shots.
The Quakers are a young squad, with only two seniors (Knapp and Jourdan Banks). Ten players are either freshmen or sophomores.
Next up for the Quakers is a trip to Niagara on Sunday followed by a home tilt against Lafayette on Nov. 30.
