PHILADELPHIA - Five Explorers are highlighted on the Atlantic 10 All-Conference Teams, led by
Jason Plumhoff and
John McCarthy's selections to the All-Conference Second Team, announced by the Atlantic 10 office on Wednesday afternoon.
In addition to Plumhoff and McCarthy on the Second Team,
Nick Dundon and
Jidell Roach earned honorable mention accolades,
Rob Friskey was named to the All-Rookie Team and Dundon added another Academic All-Conference nod to his resume.
McCarthy, a 2010 All-Rookie pick, followed up with a stellar sophomore season in goal. The Northeast Catholic product pitched five shutouts to bring his career total to 13 while helping the Explorers to a 4-2-3 Atlantic 10 record and their second consecutive conference tournament appearance. He has led the nation for several weeks in total saves and saves per game, and continued to do so this week with 127 saves (7.94 per game). He also currently ranks 13th in the nation in save percentage (.841). McCarthy had a string of four straight games in October with 10 or more saves, including a career-high 18 in a 2-2 draw with #10/9 Charlotte. His 18 saves were the second career high set in that string of games, as he posted a then-career high 14 in the Explorers' double overtime win over Rhode Island.
Plumhoff picked up a lot of the scoring this year following the graduation of
Ryan Richter last season. He racked up 18 points, 11 of which came in league play, with three of his team-leading six goals being game winners. His first game winner was in the Explorers' first win of 2011, a 1-0 decision at Army. He also scored the deciding goal at Dayton to kick off Atlantic 10 play and also converted the game winning penalty kick in a 2-1 double overtime win over Rhode Island. Plumhoff rounded out the season by assisting on two of the Explorers' four goals at Saint Joseph's, the game that clinched the team's second straight tournament berth.
Honorable mention pick Dundon anchored the La Salle defensive line, helping the squad post five shutouts. Since Dundon moved from the midfield to defense early in 2010, the Explorers have racked up a combined 10-4-4 record in Atlantic 10 play since that time along with the two straight tournament appearances. Dundon, a Biology major who sports a 3.85 GPA, also earned another nod to the Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference Team just days after earning Capital One Academic All-District First Team honors for the second straight year.
Roach, also a 2010 Atlantic 10 All-Rookie pick, earned honorable mention for his play at the midfield. He chipped in five points for the Explorers on two goals and one assist. He scored a goal in the team's 2-2 draw with #10/9 Charlotte and also added the insurance goal in the 4-0 win over Saint Joseph's that clinched the A-10 tournament berth. Roach added a game winning assist on Plumhoff's goal at Army to help the squad to its first win of 2011.
Friskey rounds out the Explorer honors with a nod to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team. He started 16 of 18 games in his freshman campaign, chipping in four points on one goal and two assists. He netted the game-winning goal with just seconds remaining in a 2-1 upset over regionally 10th-ranked UMBC, and added assists against Iona and Saint Louis.
The Explorers continue their season on Thursday night at Saint Louis University's Robert R. Hermann Stadium, when the fifth-seeded Explorers taken on fourth-seeded Temple in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament at 8:30 PM Eastern (7:30 PM Central).
