PHILADELPHIA - The Explorers scored the first four goals in their game against Saint Joseph’s, but couldn’t hold the momentum, falling 7-6 on Friday evening in the Atlantic 10 opener for both squads.
Trailing 7-6 and after playing defense for nearly four minutes, the Explorers got the ball back with about 30 seconds left in regulation after a caused turnover and ground ball picked up by Sara Ciaverelli.
La Salle couldn’t capitalize on the possession, with Saint Joseph’s sealing the game after the Explorers turned the ball over out of bounds.
Nora McGurkin led the Explorers with three points after a pair of goals, as well as an assist. Ciaverelli collected four ground balls on the day, while Melanie Sarcinello controlled four draws.
Taylor Ruland opened scoring for La Salle less than three minutes into the contest. McGurkin added her two goals, followed by one by Samantha Tulskie to put the Explorers up 4-0 with 20:21 remaining in the first half.
The Hawks would then reel off five unanswered goals.
The Explorers got back on top, 6-5, after scores by Jackie Roebuck and Lauren McDermott.
La Salle couldn’t hold the lead, allowing two Saint Joseph’s goals in the last twenty minutes of the contest.
Three Saint Joseph’s players each added a pair of goals in the team’s victory.
La Salle posted 18 turnovers to the Hawks’ 10.
La Salle will return home to McCarthy Stadium to face UMass on Sunday. The game is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m.
