Top 11 of '10-'11: Baseball Makes Run in Atlantic 10 Championship

PHILADELPHIA
- As summer continues and La Salle's student-athletes are taking time away from the court, field, pitch or pool, we have an opportunity to reflect on an entire school year's worth of triumphs. From Atlantic 10 Tournament appearances to Academic All-Americans and success on the local and regional level, La Salle student-athletes had much to be proud of in 2010-11.

To that end, GoExplorers.com presents a summer web series of the Top 11 moments or accomplishments of the past school year. Every few days, a new "top moment" will be released. After the release of all 11, La Salle fans will have the opportunity to vote on which moment or accomplishment they think was the top one of 2010-11.

Today GoExplorers.com looks back on baseball's postseason run in the Atlantic 10 Championship.

On May 21, 2011, head coach Mike Lake sat anxiously in a Saint Louis hotel room waiting official word on whether or not his team had qualified for the Atlantic 10 Championship.

In the days prior, Lake and his team missed out on clinching a berth via their own accord by dropping two of three against the Billikens.

Despite falling in their final series of the year, Lake sill got the call he desired, as La Salle did enough during the rest of the regular season to clinch the tournament's sixth and final seed and advance to the postseason for the second straight year.

The following week at Campbell's Field in Camden, NJ the fun began as La Salle opened tournament play against third-seeded Dayton in the second game of the afternoon.  That afternoon quickly turned into a long night.

Senior Kevin Fuqua started on the hill for the Explorers and lasted 6.2 innings to keep his team within striking distance early.

With the game tied at 5-5, Kevin Christy came on in relief for the Explorers and pitched his best game of the season. The set up man kept Dayton off the board for 4.1 innings and gave the Explorers an opportunity to push across the winning run in extra frames.

Over four hours into the game, in the top of the 13th inning, La Salle finally broke the tie with a two-out run scored by Zack Feierstein.

With Brendan Norton at the plate and Feierstein entrenched at second base, a hot shot through the right side that ricochet off a Flyer glove and skipped into right field allowed the run to score and gave La Salle a 6-5 edge.

Closer Pat Christensen wasted no time in the bottom of the inning and shut down Dayton to keep La Salle in the winner's bracket.

Despite the dramatic victory, the Explorers dropped both games the following day and were eliminated from postseason play on day two.

However, the 28-26 record that La Salle finished the season with is the second most victories in the history of the program, trailing just the 1985 team that tallied 31 wins and advanced to an NCAA Regional.

Individually, head coach Kevin Fuqua was named the Big 5 pitcher of the year and Mike Lake the coach of the year.

Closer Pat Christensen had another banner season anchoring the Explorer bullpen and led the Atlantic 10 in saves with 13. The sophomore has now tallied 24 in two seasons in an Explorer uniform and is five away from the all-time record.

La Salle will return its entire starting lineup in 2012 and the only starter to graduate will be pitcher Kevin Fuqua.
