PHILADELPHIA - With a time of 25:21.9 (8K),
Alfredo Santana crossed the finish line second on Saturday morning at the Belmont Plateau, en route to a silver medal at the Atlantic 10 Cross Country Championships. La Salle placed third in the 16-team field, finishing a single point behind runner-up Saint Joseph's.
Santana's quest for a second consecutive A-10 title was halted by Temple's Travis Mahoney, who finished the race five seconds ahead of La Salle's senior leader. Mahoney and Santana pulled ahead of the pack halfway through the race and remained neck and neck before Mahoney found a new gear right before the final turn.
Dan Day (26:08.3) was the second Explorer to clock in at the finish line, doing so in 13th place, good for all-conference honors.
Vince Perozze (26:19.9) placed 19th and was followed by
Jimmy Murphy (26:43.2, 42nd) and
Ben Pershall (26:49.3, 49th).
A-10 newcomer Butler (38 total points) stole the show, finishing first as a team with four top-10 finishers. Saint Joseph's (121 total points), La Salle (122 total points), and Temple (127 total points) rounded out the top-four, sporting home-field advantage.
