La Salle Ends Season With 3-1 Loss To #16 Richmond

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA – La Salle's Olivia Shoemaker scored her ninth goal of the season to tie the game early in the second half but #16 Richmond's Rebecca Barry answered with a pair of goals to give the Spiders the Atlantic 10 regular season championship and a 3-1 win on Sunday at DeVincent Field in the season finale.

Trailing 1-0, Shoemaker took a pass from senior Janel Paukovits and found the back of the cage in the 44th minute.

Her nine goals are the most by an Explorer since senior Becca Chylack had 11 in 2009 and rank just out of the top 10. She also finished the season with 19 points which rank 11th on La Salle's single-season lists.

It didn't take long for Richmond, which has won 11 straight contests and wrapped up its eighth A-10 regular season title in the last 11 years, to regain the lead. Barry scored her 16th goal of the season five minutes later when she dribbled down the left side and sent it past Shaffer.

Barry scored four minutes later to make it 3-1 and wrap up the scoring.

Taylor Deitrick tallied Richmond's first goal just 2:05 into the game.

Sophomore Lisa Shaffer made four saves in goal. She finishes the season with 282 career saves, placing her ninth after just two seasons. Shaffer is already third all-time with eight career shutouts.

Anna Zarkoski of the Spiders (15-4, 7-0 A-10) stopped four shots for the win. UR held a 16-10 advantage in shots and a 6-2 lead in corners.

La Salle wraps up the season with an 8-11, 3-4 A-10 record. The Explorers finished one game behind conference newcomer VCU for the fourth spot in the Atlantic 10 Tournament.

The game marked the end of the careers of La Salle seniors Chylack, Paukovits, Maddie Doub, Haley Jennings, Neelam Kumar, Kelly Meehan, and Lauren Wright.

Chylack finishes her career seventh on La Salle's point list with 65 and eighth in goals with 26. Kumar closes her career with 19 assists, good for fifth all-time.
