Brittany Wilson drained 22 points and pulled down a career-high 15 rebounds to lead the La Salle women's basketball squad in a 69-61 setback at Georgetown on Wednesday night.
Tonight's game marks the fifth 20+ point game for Wilson and second double-double of the season. She scored 17 of her points in a first half that saw the Explorers lead 36-24. She also added two blocks, two assists and a steal.
Shanel Harrison, a DC native playing in her hometown, added 15 points for her second straight double-figure scoring game and chipped in six rebounds.
Georgetown's all-time leading scorer Sugar Rodgers scored a game-high 28 points and added 13 rebounds.
The Explorers (1-5) got out to a hot start once again, shooting 50 percent (11-22) in the first half and never trailing from the opening tipoff until the 6:27 mark of the second half.
Wilson drained a three to open scoring and the Explorers scored 11 of the game's first 16 points to lead 11-5 at the 13:42 point. Jasmine Jackson hit a three and Rodgers nailed a jumper to bring the Hoyas (5-2) within one at 11-10 before the Explorers went on a 7-1 spurt thanks to a Wilson triple,
Indigo Dickens layup and capped by a Wilson layup.
The Hoyas scored the next seven points to knot the game at 18-18 at the 8:57 mark on two Jackson free throws, but
Michea Bryant followed up with a steal and layup to break up the Hoya momentum with 8:15 on the clock.
Michea Bryant broke up the Hoya momentum with a 7-0 run of her own, sparked by a steal at midcourt followed by an easy layup. She added three free throws in less than 30 seconds after that and capped off her run with a jumper at the 5:47 point to put the Explorers up 25-18.
Dominique Vitalis broke the scoreless drought for the Hoyas with a layup at 5:27 but the Explorers went on another 7-0 run to take a 12-point lead.
Ebonee Jones converted a 3-point play at 4:48 and Wilson added a free throw and capped off the run with a triple at 3:36.
The squads traded baskets through the remainder of the first half as the Explorers took a 36-24 lead into the break.
The Hoyas scored the first seven points of the second half to get within five at 36-31 at 17:57. The Explorers pushed their lead back to nine at 41-32 thanks to an
Arielle Ward freebie, Harrison jumper and Jones free throw, but that was the last biggest lead the Explorers would enjoy.
The home squad started chipping away at that, outscoring the Explorers 15-6 over the next nine minutes to tie the game at 47-47 with 6:57 on the clock. Harrison nailed a jumper to regain the lead but the Hoyas responded with a Rodgers jumper and free throw to take their first lead of the game at 50-49 with 6:27 left.
The teams traded leads until Rodgers put the Hoyas on top for good with a layup at 3:27 to put the score at 57-56 and spark a 12-0 run to put the game out of reach. Wilson, who had been held scoreless in the second half, scored her first points of the half on a trey with 31 seconds remaining and closed out scoring with two free throws with 16 seconds remaining for the final 69-61 score.
Rebounds were the difference in the game, with the Hoyas grabbing 47 boards to 37 Explorer boards. The Hoyas also capitalized off 21 Explorer miscues, turning those into 20 points. The Explorers forced 16 Hoya turnovers, but only put nine points on the board as a result.
The Explorers shot 34.0 percent for the game and went 4-for-20 from 3-point range. The Hoyas shot 38.1 percent for the game, going 16-of-33 in the second half after the Explorers limited them to just 26.7 percent (8-of-30) in the first half.
La Salle returns to Philadelphia this weekend for two Big 5 contests. The Explorers head to the Palestra on Friday at 7 p.m. for a meeting with Penn before playing at Villanova on Sunday at 2 p.m.
