McCarthy and Farrell Pick Up Soccer 6 Honors in Record-Setting Weekend

PHILADELPHIA - Following a two-shutout and record-setting performance in the final weekend of regular season play, junior goalkeeper John McCarthy earned both the Player of the Week and Defender of the Week honors from the Philadelphia Soccer Six. Rookie forward/midfielder Joe Farrell picked up Rookie of the Week honors after scoring a goal and helping the squad to the two wins and Atlantic 10 Tournament berth.

McCarthy stopped five shots on Friday in a 19-shot barrage at St. Bonaventure as the Explorers won 1-0. That marked the 22nd shutout of McCarthy's career, eclipsing the old school mark of 21 set by Stash Graham from 2001-04. With still one year to go, McCarthy will continue adding to that record in the 2013 season.

He stopped all seven shots on goal in a 20-shot barrage on Sunday at Duquesne in a 3-0 win that captured the team's third straight Atlantic 10 Tournament berth. Sunday's shutout marked his ninth of the season, once again setting a school record as he broke Mike Kogut's single-season shutout record of eight set in both 1982 and 1983.

Farrell also once again picked up Rookie of the Week honors, scoring the team's third goal against the Dukes to seal the victory and Atlantic 10 Tournament spot. The freshman concluded the regular season with 14 points on five goals and four assists. His 14 points and five goals are both second on the squad, while his four assists tie him for the team lead.

With the two victories and a Butler loss on Sunday, the squad is heading to the postseason for the third consecutive year and the win over the Dukes gave the team the No. 7 seed in the newly expanded eight-team tournament.

Play begins on Thursday morning at 11 when the Explorers face off against second-seeded Saint Louis at Charlotte's Transamerica Field.
