McCarthy and Farrell Earn Atlantic 10 Recognition

Complete Atlantic 10 Release

PHILADELPHIA
- Junior goalkeeper John McCarthy and rookie forward/midfielder Joe Farrell earned Atlantic 10 All-Conference Second Team and All-Rookie, respective, announced by the league office on Wednesday afternoon.

The All-Conference Second Team honor marks the second straight for McCarthy and third time in his three years that he has been recognized in the Atlantic 10. He earned Second Team honors in 2011 and All-Rookie honors in 2010.

McCarthy has cemented himself as one of the top goalkeepers in school history, breaking two school records just this past weekend. He registered his 22nd career shutout last Friday at St. Bonaventure to eclipse Stash Graham's (2001-04) mark of 21 and still has one year left to add to that total. He also broke the single-season record on Sunday, recording his ninth shutout of the season to move past Mike Kogut, who posted eight shutouts in both 1982 and 1983.

McCarthy currently ranks fifth nationally and first among Atlantic 10 everyday goalies with a .858 save percentage and his nine shutouts ties him for the league lead with First Team pick Klay Davis of Charlotte. He also ranks third nationally and first in the conference with 109 total saves on the season.

Farrell picked up the first postseason honor of his young career as he was named to the All-Rookie team. He finished the regular season with 14 points on five goals and four assists, which was second on the team. Three of his five goals on the season were game-winning goals and a fourth was a game-tying goal. He made a splash in his collegiate debut, netting his first game winner in the season-opening 3-2 overtime win over Soccer Six rival Drexel.

He also scored the game winner in La Salle's 4-0 win at George Washington, which was also Head Coach Pat Farrell's 200th career win. He added the game-tying goal in an eventual 1-1 draw against Lafayette. Farrell also assisted on Jidell Roach's game-winning goal in a 1-0 overtime win over Fordham to open the Atlantic 10 season.

Both Explorers were pivotal in helping the squad to the most nonconference wins since the 1994 squad also won six out-of-league games. They also led the Explorers to their third straight Atlantic 10 Tournament berth, capturing the No. 7 seed with back-to-back wins to conclude the regular season.

McCarthy, Farrell and the rest of the Explorer squad open tournament play on Thursday morning, taking on second-seeded Saint Louis at 11 a.m. at Charlotte's Transamerica Field.
