PHILADELPHIA - Junior goalkeeper
John McCarthy added one of the highest national academic honors to his resume, as he was named to the NSCAA Scholar All-America University Division Second Team, announced by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
McCarthy is one of four Atlantic 10 players to earn Scholar All-America recognition this season, joining Donald Smith and Tyler Gibson of Charlotte and Joshua Patterson of Duquesne.
His nod to the Scholar East Region First Team gave him automatic consideration for the national award. He joined Akron's David Meves as the two goalkeepers on the East Region First Team.
McCarthy has raked in the postseason awards this season. In addition, he earned Atlantic 10 All-Conference Second Team, NSCAA First Team All-Region and Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area.
McCarthy's record-setting season saw him break La Salle's all-time career shutout record and all-time single-season shutout record en route to helping the squad to its third straight Atlantic 10 Tournament appearance. He currently has 23 career shutouts, surpassing the old record of 21 with one more year to continue adding to that number. He also led the Atlantic 10 with nine this season, eclipsing the old record of eight.
McCarthy finished the season nationally ranked in a number of categories while also leading the Atlantic 10. He was tops in the conference and eighth nationally with a .844 save percentage and first in the A-10 (fourth nationally) with 114 total saves.
McCarthy sports a 3.32 GPA in La Salle's competitive Integrated Science, Business & Technology program.
