PHILADELPHIA - Senior guard Shanel Harrison (Washington, D.C./Good Counsel) will join the La Salle women's basketball team in the 2012-13 season. Harrison, a three-year player at Virginia Tech, graduated in December and is enrolled in graduate classes at La Salle this semester.
Harrison has one year of eligibility remaining. She will be eligible to compete with the Explorers at the start of the 2012-13 season as she did not play during the fall semester at Virginia Tech.
The 6'0 guard led the Hokies in both scoring and rebounding as a junior in 2010-11, netting 12.2 points per game and 5.5 rebounds per contest. With 780 career points and 354 just last year, Harrison is on track to become a career 1,000-point scorer. She was named the ACC Player of the Week last December and earned All-Tournament Team honors in both the Hilton Garden Hokie Classic and the Caribbean Challenge. She shot 40.4 percent last season with 135 made field goals, and is also a force defensively with 73 career blocks.
Harrison set a career high with 27 points against Boston College on Feb. 3, 2011, and pulled down a career-best 11 rebounds on two different occasions against Florida State.
Harrison is a product of Good Counsel High School in Olney, Md., where she averaged 16.8 ppg and 8.4 rpg. She was the 63rd ranked player in the HoopGurlz Hundred for the Class of 2008 and was the No. 18 guard in her class. She earned 2007-08 Washington Catholic Association Conference (WCAC) Player of the Year and First-Team All-Met honors by the Washington Post. She was a WCAC All-League player all four years, scoring 1,400 career points along with 789 rebounds, 246 assists and 244 blocks. She led Good Counsel to a 107-26 record in her four years.
