Baseball Concludes Third Annual "Stache" Bash with 7-6 Win over New York Tech in 11 Innings

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - For the third straight day, the La Salle baseball team won in walk-off fashion as Brendan Norton recorded his second game-winning hit of the weekend in a 7-6 victory over New York Tech on Sunday afternoon.  Norton went 4-for-4 in the game with three walks a run scored and the game-winning RBI.

The game marks the second straight day where La Salle won in 11 innings and is the fourth straight victory overall for the Explorers.

The Bears (2-10) recorded a walk and a hit then executed a double steal in the first inning to take a 1--0 lead of La Salle starter Dominic Sgroi, who earned a no decision.

Sgroi lasted 5.1 innings and allowed three runs off seven hits with one walk and a season-high six strikeouts.

The Explorers (10-8) answered in a big way with five runs in the home half of the first, knocking New York Tech starter Michael Auriemmo out of the game after recording just two outs in the inning.  La Salle sent 11 men to the dish in the five-run first and received RBIs from Adam Kammler, Marc Schoch, Kevin Conroy and George Smith Jr

James Bulva came on in relief of Auriemmo for New York Tech and was brilliant in an extended role.  The right-hander went 8.1 scoreless innings and allowed seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts to keep the Bears within striking distance.

After allowing consecutive runs in the fifth and sixth, Sgroi was relieved by freshman Mark Williams with one out in the sixth and the tying runs in scoring position.  Williams struck out two of the three batters he faced in the inning to keep La Salle in front 5-3.

Williams stayed on and pitched a scoreless seventh before allowing a game-tying two-run home run to Dan Lackner in the eighth that nodded the game at 5-5.

The teams traded runs in the 10th after New York Tech singled three striaght times off La Salle closer Pat Christensen while the Explorers pushed across a run on a wild pitch to extend the game.

Adam Cherry (1-0) earned his first collegiate win and pitched a scoreless 11th inning for La Salle.

La Salle will remain home at Hank DeVincent Field and take on two Big 5 rivals next week with Villanova on Tuesday and Temple on Wednesday.
