PHILADELPHIA – The women's lacrosse team defeated St. Bonaventure, 14-10, on Sunday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium to tie a program record for victories in a season with nine and get off to its best start after 11 games in program history (9-2).

La Salle (9-2, 2-0), which is now on a four-game winning streak, also achieved nine wins during the 2005 and 2010 seasons.  The Explorers were 6-5 after 11 games in 2005 and were 7-4 after 11 in 2010.

"We are pleased with the start to our conference opening weekend and very proud of our team," head coach Candace Taglianetti said. "We try to take each game one at a time because anybody can win on any given day in the A-10.  We have some things that we need to tighten up and improve upon, and we will use the week to prepare for Temple on Saturday. "

Junior Melanie Sarcinello added five goals in today's victory, while freshman Caitlyn Brostrand had four scores.  Junior Jackie Roebuck had five points on the day with two goals and three assists.

On defense, senior Allison Herman cause two turnovers, and also picked up two ground balls on the day.  Senior goalkeeper Megan Corliss made nine saves.

St. Bonaventure (2-3, 0-2) got on the board first just over a minute into the contest.  Sarcinello countered with a goal of her own just over a minute later.  Sarcinello and freshman Kelly Furman added tallies to put La Salle up 3-1 with 10:12 left in the first.

The teams traded goals and then Lauren Michaels, who led St. Bonaventure with three goals on the day, scored with 3:39 left in the first to cut La Salle's lead to 4-3 at the half.

The Bonnies quickly evened the score at 4-all when play resumed and then scored to go ahead 5-4 by the 27:56 mark.
Sarcinello scored twice and then Brostand added a goal to put La Salle back in front 7-5 with 20:42 left to play.

The Explorers weren't in control of the game yet though, as the Bonnies added a pair of goals in the next two minutes to tie the contest at 7-all.

With two Explorers sitting out with yellow cards, senior Nora McGurkin was able to score for La Salle off a feed from Roebuck to give La Salle back the lead with 12:16 to go.

Marybeth Madia evened the score at 8-all, but that was the last time St. Bonaventure would threaten.

The Explorers used a four goal scoring outburst in just under two minutes to put some distance between themselves and the Bonnies. It resulted in a 12-8 Explorer lead with 5:41 to play and the Blue and Gold were able to close out the game.

La Salle will have almost a week off to prepare for a game next Saturday at Temple.
