Explorers Falter Against George Washington, 8-7

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle lacrosse team (9-5, 2-3) dropped a critical Atlantic 10 contest to George Washington, 8-7, on Sunday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium.

Junior Melanie Sarcinello and freshman Caitlyn Brostrand each added two goals, but as a whole the Explorer offense couldn't capitalize on its 30 shots on the day.

Sarah Phillips and Nicole Lacey added three goals each for the Colonials (9-5, 3-2).

George Washington's Megan Seidman got her squad on the board less than a minute into the contest, but the first period would be a low-scoring affair.

Sophomore Maggie O'Ferrall and junior Jackie Roebuck added goals at the 15:01 and 13:12 mark of the first half to give La Salle a 2-1 lead.

The Colonials scored the final two goals of the half in the final two minutes to go up 3-2 at the break.

Brostrand evened the contest for La Salle less than two minutes into the second half and then added another tally at the 26:16 mark to give the Explorers a 4-3 lead.

The game was back and forth from there.

The teams traded goals, with La Salle's tally by Sarcinello, to keep the Blue and Gold ahead 5-4 with 23:38 left to play.

Phillips added back-to-back goals for GW a minute apart with give the Colonials back the lead at 6-5 with 22:10 remaining.

Sarcinello converted on a free position shot to tie the game at 6-all and then Claire Andrews scored an unassisted goal to put La Salle up 7-6 with 15:48 to play.

The Colonials then added two goals themselves to take a 8-7 lead with 12:03 to go.

George Washington would wind out the clock and control the ball for nearly the last six minutes of the contest.

La Salle had a chance to get back on offense after a Colonials turnover with 1:30 left on the clock.  However, La Salle then turned the ball over and George Washington hung on for the win.

The Explorers won just five draws to the Colonials' 10.

La Salle will play their last two regular season games next weekend against Massachusetts and Saint Joseph's.
