BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Two second-half goals were the difference as the La Salle men's soccer team blanked Lehigh 2-0 in Bethlehem on Wednesday night.
The Explorers improve to 4-1-1 overall, while the Mountain Hawks drop to 0-5.
After an even first half that saw just seven combined shots, rookie
Joe Farrell got the Explorers on the board less than six minutes into the second stanza.
Tom Baker crossed a ball which found
Rob Friskey in front of the goal. Friskey headed the ball toward the goal, but it bounced off of keeper Ciaran Nugent's padding. Farrell picked up the rebound and shot it in for his third goal of the season and what proved to be the game winner.
The Explorers got an insurance goal from
Kameron Teel in the 77th minute with
John McCarthy credited with his first career assist. McCarthy kicked the ball down the field, which was misjudged by a Lehigh defender. Teel picked up the ball, dribbled and then headed the ball over Nugent from 20 yards out.
"A lot of different individuals stepped up tonight," Head Coach
Pat Farrell said. "We made some adjustments in the first half and even more at halftime, and they responded with two goals in the second half."
McCarthy picked up the win in goal with five saves. Nugent took the loss, also stopping five shots.
The Explorers held a 12-10 advantage on shots, with nine of those coming in that decisive second half. Lehigh's Brian Suchoski led the Mountain Hawks with a game-high five shots, which accounted for four of McCarthy's five saves. Lehigh owned a 2-0 advantage on corner kicks.
The Explorers return to action on Saturday (9/15) when they host Long Island at 1 p.m.
