PHILADELPHIA – La Salle sophomore
Maryam Huseini tallied a goal and an assist in the Explorers 4-0 win over visiting Cornell extending the Explorers unbeaten streak at home to 11 games.
Huseini's goal was the fourth and final of the game, coming as a corner kick that bent into the far corner of the net untouched.
“We just played our game and we all played together,” said Huseini. “We had a rough start and a couple losses but now it seems like we're on the right track with our high pressure attack.”
Sophomore
Kelsey Haycook netted her sixth goal of the season, the 22
nd of her career, just under six minutes into the game. Haycook is currently seventh in the record books for career goals.
Classmate
Anna Dolhansky followed up with a goal of her own in the 28
th minute after receiving a pass from junior
Renee Washington and beating a Cornell defender.
Rookie
Jessika Kagan added to her collegiate goal tally by firing a shot to the back of the net from point blank range off a cross from Huseini with just under six minutes to play in the first half.
While the Explorers' offensive effort proved impressive, the defense may have been the difference maker allowing the Big Red only one shot all game.
“Our leadership on the backline, our communication, it leads to a lot of quality chances that we had today,” said head coach
Paul Royal. “We outshot them pretty considerably and execution in the final third always needs to improve but overall it was a great team win.”
La Salle (5-3-0) travels to in state rival Lehigh on Sunday for its final non-conference game before A-10 play begins.
“The girls are getting into a rhythm now, and this game was just about getting one step closer to being ready for the A-10 game,” said Royal.
