PHILADELPHIA - La Salle Athletics has a long history of serving the community through Project Teamwork, the youth outreach and service initative created in 1998. Project Teamwork, largely through a partnership with Big Brother Big Sisters and Logan Elementary School, has been recognized nationally the past 11 years for serving the community and those in need.

Service is an integral part of the mission at La Salle, a spirit that has been alive in Philadelphia for 150 years since the school's founding by the Christian Brothers in 1863.

Last year alone, La Salle student-athletes spent nearly 8,000 hours participating in community service. A large majority of student-athletes participate in some kind of community service during the academic year.

In celebration of the University's 150th Anniversary, Explorer student-athletes spent Saturday, September 29 demonstrating that spirit of service. The day of service was a campus-wide event organized by Campus Ministry, Project Teamwork and the various service organizations on campus.

The men's and women's basketball teams, the men's and women's swimming and diving teams as well as the cheerleading and dance teams spent the day at Logan Elementary School sprucing up the building by painting the cafeteria, hallways, benches and fences.

Across the street from Logan, Coach Mike Lake led the baseball team's efforts at the Piney Grove Baptist Church where the student-athletes helped improve the facility through groundskeeping and painting.

Nearby, women's soccer was canvassing the neighborhood surrounding campus with La Salle's Neighbor to Neighbor organization which cleans and beautifies the community through trash collection and yard work.

The women's lacrosse team partnered with Women Against Abuse on campus while the men's and women's track and cross country teams worked with the Philly Rising Collaborative in Kensington.

What they are saying

"Service to others a signature aspect of the student-athlete experience at La Salle and a vital part of our mission in Athletics. We are proud to serve others not just today, but throughout the entire year." - Dr. Tom Brennan, Director of Athletics

"Nothing is better than giving back to today's youth." - Ramon Galloway, men's basketball

"It felt good helping out the neighborhood and people were happy that we were cleaning up. It's always good to help others." - Courtney Niemic, women's soccer.

"When we heard of the La Salle Day of Service we knew that our team members would be excited to servea role in this campus-wide effort. To be able to give back to our local community and in particular the Women Against Abuse organization was truly a rewarding experience." - Candace Taglianetti Bossart, head women's lacrosse coach

"La Salle's Day of Service was a lot of fun and very rewarding. I would love to see the faces of students when they come back to Logan on Monday. We made a real transformation in the school. I believe the students will lvoe the change. We all worked together, got messy and had a great time. It was a definite highlight of my years here. It's great to see La Salle students, faculty and staff really make a difference." - Blase Szyszko, men's swimming, SAAC President
