Three Unanswered Villanova Goals Doom Explorers, 3-1

PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle men's soccer team struck first on Wednesday evening at McCarthy Stadium, but Villanova answered with three in a row put away the Explorers, 3-1. Villanova improves to 4-4-1 on the year while La Salle dips to 3-4-2. 

The Explorers got on the board first in the 22nd minute when freshman Kehiel Williams netted the first goal of his collegiate career. Senior Glenroy Chapman worked the ball to senior Jason Plumhoff, who found an open Williams. The freshman deposited a rocket into the corner of the net to put the Blue and Gold up 1-0.

The Wildcats' Padraic McCullaugh made it even in the 42nd minute after beating senior goalkeeper John McCarthy one-on-one, slipping one past his left side. Villanova outshot the Explorers 11-4 in the first period. 

The visitors pressed on in the second frame, finding the back of the net in the 72nd minute on a rebound put-back by Chris Hill. 17 minutes later when the Explorers sent numbers on offense, Villanova's Oscar Umar found an open Dylan Renna on a cross in front of the right post, burying the match's final score.

Villanova outshot La Salle 19-8 on the night and held a 5-4 corner kick advantage.

McCarthy ended the evning with five saves while Villanova's Andrew Weakly made three saves of his own. 

La Salle will reconvene on Tuesday, October 8 when it travels to Queens, N.Y. to battle #14 St. John's. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
