DEDHAM, Mass. - La Salle and Northeastern played back-and-forth ball through the first 39 minutes of play before the host Huskies went on a three-goal run to take control in an eventual 5-3 Explorer loss on Sunday in the final nonconference game of the season.
Junior
Maddy Tettelbach scored two goals and assisted on the third for the Explorers (4-8), while
Olivia Shoemaker added her team-leading eighth goal of the season as well as one assist. Natalie Stewart scored two for the Huskies and a trio of other Huskies scored the remaining goals.
Northeastern (4-7) opened scoring just 2:22 into the contest when Stewart blasted an unassisted shot into the left side of the cage. The Explorers responded quickly when Tettelbach sank a rebound of a saved Shoemaker shot in the eighth minute. Stewart added her second tally less than a minute later when she took a ball out of mid-air and slammed it home for the game's third goal in the first nine minutes.
The Huskies held a 2-1 advantage through the halftime break until Tettelbach knotted it up once again in the 39th minute on an assist from
Heather Barretta. Barretta picked up a loose ball and sent it to Tettelbach, who sent the ball into the right side of the cage.
Northeastern took the lead for good when Emmy Zweserijn scored the first of a three-goal rally in the 50th minute. Lindsay Bennett added one less than 10 minutes later and Vanessa Pryor capped the run in the 62nd minute.
Shoemaker got one back for the Explorers in the 65th minute when she tipped in a long shot by Tettelbach from outside the circle, but the Explorers were unable to mount a rally in enough time as the score finished at 5-3.
The Huskies owned a slight 18-14 advantage on shots, while the Explorers held a 5-3 advantage on penalty corners.
Lisa Shaffer made seven saves in the effort, while Husky goalie Becky Garner picked up six saves.
The Explorers open Atlantic 10 play on Friday when they host Saint Joseph's in a 3:30 p.m. contest at DeVincent Field.
