Box Score RICHMOND, Va.—La Salle women's soccer won its second consecutive Atlantic 10 Championship title, upsetting top-seeded Dayton on penalty kicks after two scoreless overtime frames. Sophomore transfer
Katie Getzinger entered the game as goalkeeper for the penalty kicks and recorded the game winning save for La Salle, saving the sixth and final penalty kick for the Explorers to earn the win.
After allowing a Dayton goal within the first minute of play off a corner kick, La Salle's defense clamped down and its offense ramped up its pressure, dominating the tempo for the majority of the game. With several near misses, including two shots that ricocheted off the posts, the Blue and Gold were primed for a goal.
In the 36
th minute, their aggressiveness and determination paid off. La Salle (15-4-3) freshman
Deja Davis fired a shot at Dayton goalkeeper Elizabeth Davis, who made a diving save and spilled the rebound into the six-yard box. Junior
Kelsey Haycook was there to clean up the remnants and sent the ball inside the far post to tie the game at 1-1 before the half. With the goal, Haycook enters a three-way tie for first in career goals (40) with current senior
Renee Washington and Amy Schneider (1999-02).
The second half brought more valuable scoring opportunities for La Salle, including a shot by Davis that was denied by the cross bar. Despite the Explorers' best efforts, the score remained tied as the clock ticked down to end regulation.
During the first overtime period sophomore
Jessica Wiggins, who recorded six saves in the contest, made two crucial saves—including one on a Dayton (14-5-2) breakaway—to keep the Explorer hopes alive.
At the end of two overtime periods the score remained knotted at 1-1 and the game was forced into a penalty kick shootout. Head coach
Paul Royal opted to sub sophomore
Katie Getzinger off the bench and into the game to guard the net during the shootout.
While typically the game would be decided on a best-of-five scenario with the first five shooters for each team, both Dayton and La Salle scored four penalty kicks after five shooters and were forced into a sudden-victory scenario.
Kerri Aiken shot sixth for the Explorers, smoothly sending her shot to the back of the net untouched. The brunt of the work then rested on the shoulders of Getzinger, who could secure the victory with a save. As the Flyers' sixth shooter stepped up to the penalty line and shot towards the upper left side of the net, Getzinger stretched out and made the save that would send La Salle's bench into jubilation and secure the 2013 title for her squad.
As tournament champions, the Blue and Gold have clinched a spot in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) tournament for the third-straight year. La Salle will find out who they will play in the first round during the selection show aired on NCAA.com at 4:30 p.m. Monday.
