MECHANICSVILLE, Va. - The La Salle men's cross country team won its second Atlantic 10 Championship in three years on Saturday morning at Pole Green Park, obliterating the competition with five top-12 finishers and a team score of 27. Nico Greco won the individual title (23:46.9, 8K), finishing over nine seconds ahead of the second place finisher, teammate Zach Sullivan (23:55.8).
"Nico ran great," head coach Dan Ireland said, who was voted A-10 Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year by his peers. "He ran like the tough, tough cross country kid that we know he is."
"I only looked back twice during my last push," Greco said post-race. "I just saw the gap getting bigger and bigger so I got more and more comfortable. So I just pushed hard all the way to the end."
So did four of Greco's teammates, all of whom earned all-conference status. Nick Ross came in fourth with a 23:58.2, followed by an eighth place finish from Vince Perozze (24:14.1) and a 12th place time from Ian Barnhill (24:22.4). No other A-10 school had more than two all-conference finishers.
Saint Joseph's came in second as a team with 75 team points, followed by George Mason (97) and UMass (133).Â
The Explorer men continue their tradition of utter dominance in the A-10, now with nine conference championships. No other current program has won more than four titles.
"It all really hasn't set in just yet," Greco said. "I'll get right back it tomorrow with two weeks of training ahead of me. I know that as a team if we can perform as well as we did today at regions, we're definitely going to Indiana."
Terre Haute, Indiana happens to be the location of the NCAA national championships, an event no La Salle team has ever reached.Â
The Explorers race again on Friday, November 15 at the Mid-Atlantic Regional in Bethlehem, Pa.Â
