NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Seven members of the La Salle women's soccer team have earned recognitions on the Atlantic 10 All-Conference teams, it was announced today.
Kelsey Haycook,
Maryam Huseini,
Courtney Niemiec, and
Jessica Wiggins were named to the first-team while
Renee Washington achieved second-team status. Haycook and
Jourdan McVicker represented the Blue and Gold on the all-academic team while freshman
Deja Davis was named to the all-rookie team.
Haycook finished the regular season as the A-10 leader in points (38) and points/game (2.0). She is tied for first in the conference with 14 goals and is fourth in assists (10). The Point Pleasant, N.J. native has spent her three seasons as an Explorer burning the pages of the La Salle record book, now ranking second in program history in goals (39) and third in points (96). The junior was also named an All-Academic selection after being named a CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree a week ago. Haycook carries a 3.81 GPA as a nutrition major.
Huseini's 13 assists this season are tied for third-most in the nation and are tied for most in the A-10. The junior has tallied 26 career assists, third all-time at La Salle. Huseini's generous foot has aided the Explorer offense which leads the conference in points/game (6.68) as well as La Salle's A-10 leading 2.58 assists/game mark.
Niemiec, the reigning A-10 defensive player of the year, anchors a back line that is largely responsible the conference's best goals against average (0.76). La Salle has shut out its opponent 11 times this season and 38 times in Niemiec's four-year career. The senior has totaled eight goals and 14 assists (30 points) in her career as a defender.
Wiggins has proven to be a shining light as La Salle's last line of defense this season, leading the conference in save percentage (.867) and goals against average (0.51). In 11 starts, the Action, Mass. native has shut out the opponent seven times, third-most for a single season in La Salle history. The Explorers are 7-2-2 in games she has started.
Washington, a second-team all-conference selection, is fifth in the A-10 in points (20) and seventh in assists (6). The senior has made her mark on the La Salle record book, ranking second in points (97), third in goals (38), and fifth in assists (21). The recognition marks the third consecutive year that Washington has earned all-conference status.
McVicker has made a name for herself on the field and in the classroom, earning academic all-conference status for the second straight year. The senior has also been named CoSIDA Academic All-District in back-to-back years as well and Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area last season. La Salle is 50-10-6 in games McVicker has started in her career. The Metuchen, N.J. native carries a 3.67 GPA in her graduate work (MBA) after posting a 3.91 GPA as an undergraduate student.
Davis has begun to make a name for herself in her rookie campaign, tallying two goals and two assists as a true freshman. The Montclair product has tallied five points over her last five games, providing as a spark off the bench for the Explorer attack.
