Scouting the Explorers
The Explorers opened their 2013 season on Saturday, doubling up on Mount St. Mary's 12-6 to snag the win.
Sophomores
Erin McCabe and
Kelly Furman led the offensive attack, with McCabe netting three goals and Furman scoring twice and assisting on two others.
Katelyn Fay recorded two goals in her collegiate debut and senior
Lauren McDermott also added two goals.
Senior keeper
Maura Malone stopped seven shots while giving up just six goals on 17 shots for a .588 save percentage in the first game.
Leading scorer and Atlantic 10 All-Conference pick
Melanie Sarcinello is back for her senior season after posting a team-high 39 points on 33 goals and six assists last season. Also back is sophomore attacker
Caitlyn Brostrand who blasted home a team-high 36 goals as a rookie and posted 37 points total.
McDermott drained 28 goals and assisted on seven others for 35 points last season and
Claire Andrews contributed 27 points on 25 goals and two assists off the bench in her rookie campaign.
Scouting the Dragons
Alyse Maiden recorded five points on three goals and two assists as Drexel opened its 2013 campaign with a 10-3 win over George Washington. Kelli Joran added three goals and an assist in the win as well. Keeper Teresha Bradley stopped six shots in the win.
Maiden and Joran lead the Dragon offensive attack and are the leading returnign scorers from an 11-6 team last season. Maiden is the leading returning scorer with 36 goals and 19 assists last season while earning Second Team All-CAA honors. Joran, a First Team All-CAA selection last season, recorded 29 goals and five assists for 34 points.
Drexel was picked to finish third in the CAA this season.
Scouting the Bison
Howard has struggled early, posting an 0-3 record. The Bison opened their season on Feb. 8, dropping their season opener 20-10 to Winthrop. They have also played GW, falling 22-7, and most recently dropped a 22-2 decision at Longwood.
The Bison do return all four of their top scorers from last season, led by junior Courtland Lackey who scored 26 goals. She added two assists for 28 points. Leading point-scorer Cynithia Smalls returns for her junior season after draining 25 goals and assisting on eight others. Sophomore Jaymie Cox was third on the team in her rookie campaign, scoring 20 goals. Senior captain Jillian Parker scored 10 goals on 18 shots last year and added four assists.

The Explorers return next week for a pair of home games. They host Long Island on Wednesday, Feb. 27, at 7 p.m., and Delaware on Friday, March 1, also at 7 p.m.
