Two Explorers Hit Milestone in La Salle's Program-Best Start

PHILADELPHIA - With the lacrosse team in the midst of an 11-day break before the start of the Atlantic 10 season on Saturday, the program and the La Salle athletic department would like to take the opportunity to congratulate two Explorers who hit the 100-goal milestone in the last few weeks.

Senior captains Lauren McDermott and Melanie Sarcinello, both part of Head Coach Candace Taglianetti Bossell's first recruiting class, both scored their 100th career goals this month to help the program secure its best nonconference record and best start in program history.

"We couldn't be more proud of the success they are both having," Taglianetti Bossell said. "Mel and Derm hold a special place in my heart, since they are both part of my first recruiting class. To see them achieve this feat together is awesome, and I believe we will see them accomplish more milestones as we embark on the second half of our season."

McDermott, who currently has 106 goals for her career, hit the milestone in the 14-13 come-from-behind win at San Diego State on March 8. She tallied three goals in that contest, the first of which was her 100th. She added both the game-tying and game-winning goals against the Aztecs. McDermott scored 34 goals in her freshman campaign to help the squad to the Atlantic 10 Tournament, then added 23 and 28 in 2011 and 2012, respectively. She is up to 21 this season.

Sarcinello also made a splash with her 100th goal, that score also marking the game winning tally in an 11-8 win over Lafayette on Tuesday. She scored two goals and assisted on one other in that contest. Sarcinello scored 20 goals in her freshman season that saw the team qualify for the Atlantic 10 Tournament, and followed up with 36 in her sophomore year and 33 in her junior season. She currently has 11 this year after moving back to a more defensive midfield position.

McDermott, Sarcinello and the rest of the Explorers return to action this weekend, looking to make the trek toward an Atlantic 10 Tournament berth when they host Massachusetts on Saturday at noon.
