La Salle Drops 20-11 Decision To No. 16/11 UMass In A-10 Opener

PHILADELPHIA – Caitlyn Brostrand led La Salle with three goals in the Explorers' 20-11 loss to #16/11 Massachusetts in the Atlantic 10 opener for both squads on Saturday afternoon.
 
Melanie Sarcinello added two goals, one assist, five draw controls and two ground balls. Alanna Diffendal also recorded a three-point day with two goals and an assist, and Kelly Furman scored two goals. Katelyn Fay and Lauren McDermott added a goal apiece.

Lauren Terracciano led UMass with five goals. Cori Murray led in points with six, on three goals and three assists, and Sam Rush added a five-point day on four goals and one assist. Kelsey McGovern dominated the draw controls with 11.
 
The Explorers drop to 8-2 overall (0-1 Atlantic 10), while the Minutewomen improve to 9-2 (1-0 Atlantic 10).

The 11 La Salle goals were the second-most scored on UMass this season, behind only top-ranked Northwestern which scored 16 in the season opener.

UMass jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Brostrand got the Explorers on the board on a free position shot at 22:51. Fay scored at 18:23 and Furman scored the third goal at 9:35, while UMass built a 14-3 halftime lead.

The Explorers outscored the Minutewomen 8-6 in the second half, but could not crack the 10-goal differential until the final score with 10 seconds remaining in the game.

La Salle edged the Minutewomen in ground balls, 17-15. UMass won the draw control column, 19-14, and outshot the Explorers 33-17.

Maura Malone played 51:06 in goal, stopping seven shots. Savanna Smith saw almost nine minutes, stopping one. All three UMass goalkeepers saw time, with the game credit going to Rachel Vallarelli, who made both UMass saves in the game in 36:30 of play. Jamie Schiloski played 16:45, and Meaghan Kollmeier played the final 6:45.

The Explorers head to George Washington on Friday (4/5) for a 4 p.m. contest.
