Three Record Hat Tricks As Lacrosse Opens Cali Trip With 14-8 Win Over Fresno State

Box Score

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Three players recorded hat tricks on Tuesday evening as the La Salle lacrosse team opened its two-game California swing with a 14-8 win over Fresno State on the campus of San Diego State University.

Lauren McDermott, Erin McCabe and Melanie Sarcinello each recorded three goals to lead all scorers. Claire Andrews added two goals and one assist.

"We didn't play our best today but we found a way to be successful and get the win on the road," Head Coach Candace Taglianetti Bossell said. "We were pleased with how our attack shared the scoring responsibilities and played as a unit."

Andrews opened scoring less than two minutes into the game, netting a goal at the 28:06 mark. Brostrand put the Explorers up 2-0 just over a minute later with an unassisted shot of her own.

The Bulldogs responded with back-to-back goals to draw even at 2-2 with 19:06 left in the first half, but Maggie O'Ferrall netted the go-ahead goal less than one minute later on a Kelly Furman assist and the Explorers never trailed after that.

McCabe scored the first of her three goals at 14:32 to give the Explorers a 4-2 edge.

Fresno State's Margaret Wolford drained a goal at 12:54 to draw within 4-3, but the Explorers went on a six-goal run spanning both halves to put the game out of reach.

Andrews netted her second of the game to spark the run at 9:42 of the first half. McDermott scored two of her three in the run, McCabe added a second and Sarcinello scored two of her goals to give the Explorers a 10-3 lead.

Fresno State's Natalie Harrington broke up the Explorers' run with 16:37 left in the game, and Holly Cisneros added a goal to get within 10-5.

Brostrand scored her second of the night at 14:43, and after another Harrington goal, Sarcinello drained her third at 11:34. McDermott completed her hat trick at 9:55 as the Explorers went up 13-6.

Fresno State got two goals within a one-minute span to round out the Bulldog scoring.

McCabe added one more to complete her hat trick with 3:47 remaining in the game for the final 14-8 tally.

The Explorers outshot the Bulldogs 30-14 and owned a 17-11 advantage in ground balls. The Bulldogs controlled 13 draws to the Explorers' 10.

Maura Malone played all 60 minutes in goal for the Explorers, stopping two shots in the win. Katie Wilbur took the loss for Fresno State, making nine saves in the effort.

The Explorers return to action on Friday, when they play San Diego State at 10 p.m. Eastern/7 p.m. Pacific.
