Lacrosse Drops Heartbreaker At Saint Joseph's, 13-10

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - La Salle lacrosse went toe-to-toe with Saint Joseph's in a back-and-forth match on Friday afternoon on Hawk Hill, but it was the Hawks who pulled out the 13-10 victory behind a four-goal rally in the second half.

The loss drops the Explorers to 8-5 (0-4 Atlantic 10), while the Hawks improve to 8-5 overall and even their A-10 record at 2-2.

Katelyn Fay led the Explorers with a career-high-tying four goals, while Lauren McDermott and Caitlyn Brostrand added two apiece. Erin McCabe and Melanie Sarcinello added one goal each to round out the La Salle offense. A trio of Hawks recorded hat tricks, including Abby Ananian, Julia Falcone and Emily Bowers.

Neither team got on the board for over five minutes to start the game. The Hawks drew first blood at 24:42 when Falcone took a feed from Val Paolucci.

Both defenses held strong again for almost nine minutes, when Ananian converted a free position shot to put SJU up 2-0.

Fay got the Explorers on the board at 14:07 on a free position shot of her own, and the Hawks went up 3-1 just over a minute later on a Meghan McDevitt score from Ananian.

La Salle rallied with back-to-back goals within 53 seconds of each other to draw even at 3-3. Sarcinello scored at 11:56 followed by Fay's second goal of the day at 11:03 on an assist by McDermott.

The Hawks responded with two goals to take a 5-3 lead at 8:15. McDermott drew the Explorers within 5-4 at 7:35 before SJU got its final goal of the half at 6:39 to take a 6-4 lead.

The Explorers closed out the first half with three straight goals to take a 7-6 lead at halftime. Fay drained her third of the game at 5:22 followed by both of Brostrand's goals at 3:07 and 1:15.

SJU regained the lead less than three minutes into the second half on back-to-back goals to open scoring after the break to take an 8-7 lead.

Fay converted her fourth goal of the game to knot the score at 8-8 with 24:51 on the clock.

However, a four-goal Hawk rally over a five-minute span proved the difference. Ananian scored two and Bowers and Falcone added a score each to send the Hawks up 12-8 midway through the second half.

McCabe broke up the Hawk rally with an unassisted shot at 13:58. Hannah Hutchins scored at 10:27 to regain the four-goal lead for the Hawks at 13-9, and McDermott rounded out the game's scoring on a free position shot for what proved to become the final score as neither team converted in the final 9:18 of play.

The Explorers outshot the Hawks 30-24 and won the ground ball battle, 20-16. They also edged the home squad on draw controls, 13-12 and committed just nine turnovers to the Hawks' 13.

Maura Malone suffered the loss in goal, playing all 60 minutes and stopping five shots. Genevieve Giblin earned the win behind an 11-save effort.

The Explorers return to action on Sunday when they host Temple in the 2013 home finale. The annual Senior Day celebration will take place approximately 15 minutes prior to first draw.
